The history of food and drink has been documented extensively throughout history. UK has a rich indigenous culinary tradition its colonial history has profoundly enriched its native cooking traditions. British cuisine is the heritage of cooking traditions and practices associated with the United Kingdom.

British cuisine absorbed the cultural influences of its post-colonial territories – those of South Asia.

In ancient times Celtic agriculture and animal breeding produced a wide variety of foodstuffs for the indigenous Celts and Britons. Anglo-Saxon England developed meat and savoury herb stewing techniques before the practice became common in Europe. The Norman conquest introduced exotic spices into England in the Middle Ages. The British Empire facilitated a knowledge of Indian cuisine with its "strong, penetrating spices and herbs.

The history of Britain has played a large part in its traditions, its culture – and its food. The Romans for instance brought us cherries, stinging nettles (to be used as a salad vegetable), cabbages and peas, as well as improving the cultivation of crops such as corn. And they brought us wine!

Brewing in London

The Worshipful Company of Brewers is one of the Livery Companies of the City of London. London brewers are known to have organised as a group in the 13th century. Their first royal charter was granted by Henry VI in 1438.

The Saxons were excellent farmers and cultivated a wide variety of herbs. These were not used just for flavour as they are today but were used as bulk to pad out stews. The Vikings and Danes brought us the techniques for smoking and drying fish.
